His father James Colson Baker struggled with depression and unemployment as did his mom Sonia Alane left them when he was nine. When he was in sixth grade, he started listening to hip-hop. Baker was the author of four mixtapes in 2007 through 2010, before signing to Bad Boy Records. With lyrics that were quicker than a bullet train the Cleveland artist saw an explosive climb to fame in the year. The rapper went from releasing self-released tapes to signing with labels. It was after that, with each of his releases making it to the top 10 charts.
